THE STORY
“A 72 × 52 cm silkscreen whose title joins two Shipibo-Konibo concepts: 'kené,' the ancestral geometric design system, and 'Yacumama.' Olinda Silvano, a kené master, extends a tradition that was originally applied to ceramics, textiles, and the body into the medium of silkscreen. Her work is a continuation of knowledge transmitted through generations of women in the Peruvian Amazon.”
About the artist
Olinda Silvano is an artist, kené master, and community leader of the Shipibo-Konibo people from the Peruvian Amazon. She learned kené — an ancestral system of geometric patterns passed between women in her family — from her grandmother, and has worked for years to preserve and transmit this living tradition in Lima and internationally.
